Features & Colors
The Wood
Our White Oak lumber is harvested and milled in Missouri. We start with kiln dried, furniture grade stock, planed on three sides, in thicknesses up to 8 quarters - that's 2" thick! If you have ever enjoyed bourbon or scotch, then you are already intimately familiar with White Oak, the hardwood of choice for aging barrels. Or perhaps you have heard of Old Ironsides. That ship, also known as the USS Constitution, has a hull once believed to be made of iron, for the British cannonballs rolled off its sides! We do not use particle board, mdf (medium-density fiberboard), plastic, or plywood of any kind.
In addition to White Oak, we also offer Red Oak, Alder, Ash, Basswood, Birch, Beech, Butternut, Cherry, Cypress, Hard Maple, Hickory, Locust, Paulownia, Pecan, Poplar, Sassafras, Soft maple, Sycamore, Walnut, African Mahogany, Andiroba, Blood Wood, Bocote, Bolivian Rosewood, Canary Wood, Goncalo Alves, Granadillo, Guancaste, Honduras Rosewood, Jatoba, Lacewood, Morado, Padauk, Plantation Teak, Prima-Vera, Purple Heart, Red Heart, Shedua, Spanish Cedar, Teak, Wenge, Yellow Heart, Zebra Wood, and Zircote.
The Finish
To add depth, we offer a wide variety of finished colors using Danish oil. This special blend of penetrating oil and varnish hardens in the wood, not on the surface of the wood, while enhancing the natural depth of grain and feel. Our shtenders are then hand rubbed with three coats of satin urethane resins, making the finish extremely beautiful and durable. See colors below.
The Wheels / Adjustable Feet
Our ball casters are manufactured in the United States. They are constructed of a durable die cast zinc body and wheel, and are available in either a hard wheel option in two sizes - small and large - for hard flooring surfaces like wood, OR with a rubber tread option in the large size only for soft areas like carpet. They are available with a brake in the large size only. The available colors seen below are Satin Chrome, Bright Chrome, Bright Brass, and Antique Bronze. Screw in height-adjustable feet are also available.
Additional Features
The storage compartment is approximately 1 1/2 square feet and has a door that doubles as an angled surface large enough to accommodate an Artscroll Stone Chumash - handy while sitting for the Torah reading - and has an adjustable tension support arm/limiter for the door.
A keyless, mechanical lock with 1,000 possible combinations is available for an extra charge.
A hat ledge to safely store your Borsalino when not being worn is available for an extra charge.
An engraved name plate in silver color or gold color is available for an extra charge.
Engraved Mogen Dovid's on the sides painted gold, black, or just stained are available for an extra charge.
The standard shtender is available in 3 heights to accommodate most people: not so tall, average, and tall. Custom heights are available, as well.
The original shtender weights approximately 45 ppounds,
The pitch of the top surface is 8 degrees.
The measurements of the top surface are 14" x 20".
Live-Edge is available in a variety of thicknesses. See the gallery for a top made of 8-quarter live edge walnut.
Shou Sugi Ban (Japanese wood burning) with (or without) stain and polyurethane is also available. See a shtender in the gallery with this technique.
A compartment with custom tambour doors (a roll top desk feature) is also available. See Rabbi's Shtender CHBD in the gallery with this feature.
All shtenders are shipped fully assembled, glued, and screwed.
